My partner's kid found the coin in the pics and keeps asking what it is.

From what I can find online it's a Chinese cash coin....but other than that I'm drawing a blank on dates, provinces and value etc.

Anyone able to sate the youngsters curiosity?

I think this is a modern copy of a Shih Tsu cash coin (authentic ones date from 1644-1661). The writing style is chunky, crude, and does not look authentic to me. The mintmark also does not match common ones for this coin. However, if someone more expert in Chinese coins has seen an authentic one that looks like this, I will defer to them.

Here's a photo of an authentic one.

Agree with Seeker55. Also, the even colour screams modern production or severe cleaning. Suspect the first.

Agree; it's a replica, not a genuine coin. Replica coins like this are often made for use in "Feng Shui" good luck amulets and charms.
