I posted this a while back in the error/variety forum. I found this in an old shoebox.. don't ask me why or where it came from. No idea! It has beautiful rainbow and dark blue toning but it is also brown and dark. I don't know if the brown is just tarnish or if it is corrosion? Can you tell from these awful photos and also what grade would you give it? Thank you!

Interesting find - this is a Maundy fourpence and I would be very surprised if it had been in circulation - they were effectively NCLT coins! The UK did issue 4d coins for circulation, but these are known as groats and had Britannia on the reverse.

Forgive my ignorance (and thank you for the information) but what does this mean? I looked up Maundy 4p and this would have been a gift to a special recipient by the Monarchy? I didn't know the reverse was atypical. Is the condition of this coin quite poor? It looks so beautiful and pristine minus the brown coloring and what appear to me scratches (which I can't see with the naked eye)

The toning is rather beautiful and there's no circulation wear as such, but the vertical scratches on the obverse worry me and make me think the coin has been harshly cleaned in the past.

Maundy coins are struck every year as presentation pieces: the reigning monarch distributes an equal number of pence to an equal number of poor men and women as there are years in the monarch's age. So in two days' time, 95 men and women will each receive 95 pence made up of these specially-minted 1p, 2p, 3p and 4p silver coins dated 2022.

Wow, that's amazing. So interesting, thank you! I'm more excited now about mine! Although, yes, those scratches look like it's been cleaned? So disappointing. Thank you so much for all the great info! I had no idea!

I agree with NumisRob about uncirculated. My point it is the scratches, why on only one side (O)? seem strange to me. For the toning: It is IMO and medium-low toning. Some collectors like.

I was thinking the same thing.. why only clean the front? And thanks for your input!
