Marcus Clodius Pupienus Maximus, who had been a successful military leader during the Severan Dynasty, came to power along with Decimus Caelius Calvinus Balbinus in the chaotic year 238 AD, which went down in history as the "Year of the Six Emperors".

This coin's reverse motif, proclaiming mutual affection between the co-emperors, is ironic in the extreme, as Balbinus was highly suspicious of Pupienus' retention of a cohort of German bodyguards, and refused to allow it to protect them both. This left the co-emperors vulnerable to the machinations of a disaffected Praetorian Guard, members of which were able to surprise and murder them, reportedly while they were engaged in an argument over the matter. Thus the pair's rule came to an end after a mere 99 days.

This specimen's diameter is variable, from around 21 mm to over 22 mm. Its weight comes in at 5.2 grams. I have it as RIC 9b (Sear 8518).

Another aspect of this coin that is noteworthy is that the effigy is apparently pretty lifelike, as evidenced by surviving sculptures of Pupienus, such as the one below.

You have a good eye, Lucky, as evidenced by this impressive silver AND the Gothicus of your other post. Even stylized as it is, this portrait is quite nice!

In doing a little more research, I'm surprised at how often this particular coin comes up for sale, and how consistently those offered look to be in a very high grade.

Just a bit more regarding Pupienus and Balbinus.

Their coinage in numerous instances utilized the imagery of clasped hands as a reverse motif. For Pupienus, alternative legends were CARITAS MVTVA AVGG and PATRES SENATVS. Balbinus' read PIETAS MVTVA AVGG, FIDES MVTVA AVGG, or CONCORDIA AVGG.

So the picture being promoted through their individual issues was that insofar as both their working and personal relationships were concerned there was a state of harmony, cordiality, faithfulness, singularity of purpose, and good will existing between the two men, which seems to stray rather far from the truth on every count. It may be that at their advanced age (Balbinus was 60, and Pupienus at least 70 years old), their widely differing backgrounds and ossified outlooks precluded anything but a contentious alliance.

Thanks LC for the interpretation of the clasped hand reverse...Some serious propaganda going on there!
