Hi, I just purchased this coin online and I have some doubts it might be fake. It is not graded by grading company and came in what seems to be the original coin capsule that all Olympic coin came in. Up to that point, all seems legit.

Now following what was said in this post, I have noted slightly less details on the obverse and somewhat a rougher than usual finish; I was able to compare to a few similar Montreal olympic coins I have but not many and I know the finish can differ from coin to coin.

I also noted the difference in weight. With the plastic capsule, the coin weighs 53.5g, while the other 1973 world map I have weighs 55.3g. Other 10$ coins in my 28 pieces set weigh anywhere between 54.0g to 55.8g.

Please let me know if you have any other way to spot a fake 1974 mule.

Thank you!

@Syl20: Images of your coin will be necessary in order for folks to help you.

The weight difference you note, however, could be a true sign of an issue. The capsule could also be the issue - I would take the coin out of the capsule and weigh it again, then compare it against the known weight of a genuine example.

As mentioned, we really need clear pictures of both sides to help.
Also your heading should really contain the year and denomination
of the coin in question along with something like "error", " genuine" etc.
The rest is unnecessary

One would guess the fakes would not be 92% silver an XRF would tell the story

Is it magnetic? the weight difference already tells a lot. If it is magnetic, you already know what it is.
