I have an 1802 Mo 8 Reales with two marks on the reverse that I assumed were chop marks, but I am not so sure now. One is a very small 0.5mm rectangle punched into the surface. The other is a round 1mm hole that on the surface looks punched because it has a slightly raised area round the rim, but on magnification with a loupe it appears to be gouged out.
My question is if these are chop marks that would indicate circulation in China (or elsewhere in Asia) or if anything can be assumed about the circulation history of this coin based on these two marks. There are no other marks on the coin, obverse or reverse, and certainly none of what are normally considered Chinese chop marks. What is your opinion?
