Well its been about ten years or so, wow has the gold market changed! I had mostly been collecting late nineties proof sets and silver eagles. Where is the best places to buy and sell coins? ebay? Where can I find values of my coins, do I have to buy the Red Book? A couple eagles I have seem to be worth more than the others, any ideas why? I was thinking about selling off what I have and buying a 1oz gold piece of some type. Does this sound ridiculous? I had always wanted to collect golden eagles when I was younger but never had the cash. Another option would be to try to build a Silver eagle proof set..

This is my fist post, have mercy! And thanks in advance. :)

Welcome back to coin collecting and to the Forum. Mint products that are primarily used for bullion investing will largely flucuate with the price of gold and silver. In the silver Eagles there are a few scarce dates if you are trying to build a set. One that comes to mind is the 2006-W Burnished issue. One thing for sure, a date and mint set would be beautiful. ebay is one place to buy and sell, but you have to get a knack for it. There are still honest dealers, but many who aren't. I never buy from sellers with less than a 99.7% positive rating as a seller and a no questions asked return policy. There are several price guides, with the Graysheet being the most current as to market. I advise you to decide what your goal is as a collector, what do you really want to collect giving your income and time considerations. Take your time. Welcome back!

Welcome Back!

This forum is a great place to buy and sell coins once you get 50 posts.

I have an ebay site that I am constantly adding to:

http://stores.ebay.com/Trusted-Coin...Collectables

A great place to find what values of your coins are and what they are selling for is:

www.numismedia.com

They provide a Fair Market Value based of a few factors.

Your eagles depend obviously upon the size and years for basing value. The best buy for the buck, if you are looking for bullion would prob be the South African Krugerrrands, then Canadian Mapleleafs, then American Eagles.

American Silver Eagle Proof Sets are definitely doable.

Again Welcome Back! You have found a good place. -Tom

I have always found ebay a good location to buy either standard pre-packaged mint items, or certified coins where you feel comfortable enough that the certification holder has never been tampered with. The beauty of those purchases are you can always determine the fair market value of the item prior to bidding or buying.
STAY CLEAR OF ANY COINS SHIPPING FROM CHINA. MARK MY WORDS!DON'T EVEN CHANCE IT!!
As for the older raw coins, (and this is not to take away from the honesty of most ebay sellers) you need to find yourself a local dealer(s) where you get a gut feeling he has integrity and really values you as a customer. Remember, he is selling a commodity where there are very few buyers, so let them earn your trust. I have been into coin stores before where you walk in, and the snotty and abrubt attitude of the counter staff, takes away from the enjoyment of looking around at all the items. I never go back to those places. It's very cut and dry. I just find it a much more comfortable purchase when I can hold and view the coin prior to purchasing with helpful staff. Its also nice to have the ability to haggle a bit with the dealer over the price, and its nice that once you have made a few purchases they will usually mark down the asking price on the fly of the items you seem to be interested in as a way of keeping your business. Some dealers will actually (for the lack of a better word), eat the sales tax as well. Getting back to ebay, I must have made approx 50 raw coin purchases in the past and I feel I have only been burned (through bad or ambigious photographs) approx 3 times. Thats a pretty good track record. Make sure you review the feedback record of all ebay sellers. Look for nasty comments, or examples where the buyers are complaining the item never arrived. That makes me suspicious.
In closing, it's fun to explore all the options, but don't dive into the deep end until you wade around in the shallow end 1st.

I have been using e-bay and my local dealer for numismatics. Right now, I just buy off one e-bay person as they accept MOs and they have plenty of what I am currently looking for.

I agree to never buy from China - and I'm not happy with trying to buy from other countries either (except Canada). Also look at the feedback of the person selling.

I also buy Silver eagles. I just buy them to have bullion, so I don't buy proofs. Some proofs seem astronomical. The 1996 eagles are the most expensive - they made less that year. For bullion buying, I have used e-bay, but also APMEX.com for larger purchases. there are a few othe auction sites, but they are hit or miss IMO. Note that when buying ASEs, silver stackers will buy and sell for spot, plus. But your coin dealer may charge book value - which is more.

Also APMEX and Kitco sells eagles, maples, kruggerands and Philharmonics online.

As to buying 1 oz of gold in exchange for your other stuff. I'd definitely get a Red Book or greysheet for figuring out the worth of your items. You know the worth of bullion as it is listed everyday...

My coin dealer promtes collecting less items, but those of more worth instead of collecting a lot of different things. As I am just re-starting this hobby myself, I am more entertained and happy trying to fill books. Silver stacking satisfies my paranoia...

I do buy from ebay and make sure you check the feedback before you bid. Also, http://toolhaus.org/ is a good place to check feedback. I try to limit my ebay purchases to <$25.

There is nothing like having a local dealer to buy from. You may get better prices, no shipping, a friendly face and the opportunity to hold before you buy.

Good luck and take your time growing your collection.

Very Cool. I have to decide if I want to put together an uncirculated eagle set (I've got 1996-2000 already) or if I want to go for something bigger.

White Light, welcome to our little community and welcome back to collecting. The other repsondants have already covered most of what I would say, but I thought I'd add one little comment about your bullion coins.....don't limit yoursef to just U.S. there. I'm working on a set of Proof Silver Eagles myself here and there, but my all time favorite bullion coins are the Mexican Libertads. They're beautiful coins, and often the mintages are much lower than the corresponding dates in Silver Eagles and usually don't cost too much more. There are some scarcer dates ( 1988, 1998 and all the Proofs ), but I really enjoy them, and I'm currently attempting a set of them in Proof. I also adore the Canadian Maple Leaves. Once again, beautiful coins, and there are many ways to collect them. The many privy marks offered make for an interesting set, and there's some real sleepers and scarcities there. But most importantly.....HAVE FUN!!

Also, what is your final goal? What I mean is, what do you truely want to collect? If you like the Silver Eagles, then keep them and finish off the set. If you just want a gold coin, then you could trade in what you have towards the cost and pay for the rest but beware of the price of gold when you do.

If you are just getting back into collecting then you know that over the last year that gold and silver has been going back and forth like no other and as the price of spot changes then so does the price of buying a gold coin. Because of my financial situation there is no way I can afford gold right now but treat it the way I would a key coin to my series, what is more important at the time and what would I be happier with. If you can afford it, then go for it, if not, look into some other ideas and work your way up to it.

I think you are on the right track though and seeing what you have first is the best thing to do, from there it is easy to branch out. Besides, after ten years you may start collecting other coins you have always wanted. Get the bed book and look through it and help re-spark the interest.
