Lately at ebay I have been noticing these Morgan dollar auctions that all have the same look. Either the seller is doctoring his Morgans or has someone do the doctoring for him and then he lists them, but every Morgan is scrubbed clean and then seriously polished and then photographed in a way so that to an untrained eye they look "new".

He claims them to be AU/UNC or even just UNC, and then he has a lengthy "cover his ass" statement along with an unconditional 30 day return policy. But his CYA is written in a way where any buyer would have a hard time returning their Morgan since he says that you get the actual coin in the pictures, that it is authentic and UN-certified, and because of his high volume, "some" of his coins might be cleaned. All of that will be true except for the heading in the listing where he says they are AU/UNC or UNC. But since he's covered himself further on down the listings where he says that they "might be cleaned", AU/UNC doesn't mean much either.

It's people like this that take advantage of novice collectors and give the hobby a bad reputation. It shows that he has sold over 57,000 things at ebay and he has 99.8% positive feedback rating. And selling this many and still a 99% feedback score tells you everything about his buyers.

Here's just four of his Morgans and then below is a link to all the Morgans he currently has up for auction, 950! They all look almost identical. Recently he's even got a few with a very UN-natural fake toning but still the same doctored coin under that fake tone. What a guy.

Below the four pictures is a link to his entire list of 950 coins, and they all came out of the same doctored coin factory.

You are correct this type of ebay dealer gives the hobby a bad reputation. The guy is most likely buying cleaned and polished Morgan's at a discount, then, photo shopping the image to make the coin appear new. He may dip all the coins to get rid of unwanted tarnish as it is quick & cheap and gives the coin a new look appearance. The guy gets a lot of negative feedback as he has a 143 revised negative feedbacks. There are a few ebay coin seller's that the use the deceptive and enhanced photos to improve profits.

These sorts of ebay sellers are incredibly frustrating because they're completely hosing novice collectors. I was that novice collector just a few years ago, and I purchased several polished Morgans at a high premium that were advertised as problem-free AU/BU coins. A word of wisdom to new collectors or those looking to buy Morgans off of ebay: Don't buy coins with enhanced photos, and don't buy coins that look "shiny, bright, and new" yet don't have MS detail - specifically in the hair and eagle.

If you make a saved search for Morgan dollars scroll down to show all filters and select seller, check show only items from, check specific sellers, check exclude and enter the seller's ID in the small box next to it and check apply. I just excluded morgandealer from my saved search.
