I recently decided that I was going to finally sort out my world coins and possible sell off my spares. I listed all my spares in a sale post and the started clearing out my closets as well and found an old whitman folder with 3 pences in better condition in there as well! I have been trying to assign values to each and came across a pretty nice 1926 3 pence. Problem is when I went to look it up I found 2 different KM #s. KM 813a and also KM 827

How do I tell the difference between the two to figure out which one I have? Also just so I can get an idea of actual value in comparison to my old krause what would be the current values for both kms?

thanks

Thank you dl20k for the current values. Do you know the differences in appearance between the 2?

Nope, that's why I didn't mention it. But the experts will surely enlighten us any minute now!

The difference between the two 1926 threepences is that the 827 is the "modified effigy" version ie. the portrait was changed slightly with the details more clearly defined.

The easiest way to tell them apart is to look for the designers initials on the truncation of the neck. On the 827 they are very near to the back of the neck and there are no full stops (periods) after the letters. The beading is also more pronounced.

Hope that helps.

I suppose it depends on the grade. The initials could be worn off at some point.

Here is a photo comparing the two coins. The 827 is on the right.
