I'm very happy to report that I've finally managed to get one of the 1926 modified effigy pennies, in good shape. Note the bolder denticles on the obverse and the position of the colons being closer to one letter, rather than being dead center. Opinions? Edited by Numismat 02/07/2009 2:14 pm

Yes I would say that is!
The initials BM certainly look further back on the truncation of the neck than 2nd coinage.
Do you have one you can compare it to?

Very nice! Honestly, I've been trying to figure out the difference between the two types of this date. Do you have a non-modified version of the 1926 to show as a comparison? I actually have a really nice 1926, but I can't tell which version it is.

I've looked for one going by the colon between BRITT:OMN, particularly the position of the top colon to the T. By that detail, yours looks to be the ME

Ah, thanks, KurtS. I think that mine may be the First Effigy.

Hey guys, I don't have another 1926 that is in high enough of a grade to see the BM. That's another way to tell the difference... if you draw a straight line from the top of the I in IMP - the first coinage it will point just to the right of BM, and the second effigy it points directly at the M. Most of the time the BM is worn and you have to look at the colons and denticles. By the way Archaz... a really nice 1926 first effigy is still a key coin =)

Doesn't have to be another 1926. One minted from 1911 to 1925 should be ok.

In fact it doesn't have to be a penny! Here are examples of both effigies 1st Effigy 2nd Effigy

Doesn't have the Ind Imp but shows the position on the neck of BM, even if the full stops are worn off!

Quicksilver - I never thought of looking at another type, but you are totally right - the BM position is the same as the penny. Thanks for posting that comparison. =)
