I was on e-bay and found a seller calling a 1923 Poland 20 Groszy, a "German Occupation" coin.

I sent him a question asking if Poland was under German occupation in 1923. (knowing full well that it wasn't)

Here is the reply I got:
Quote:
Poland was under German occupation from 1939 to 1945 this coin been mint for General Gouvernement in 1940's with date 1923

Is this true? I couldn't find anything in Krause about it. The seller also has a 1923 10 Groszy and a 1938 50 Groszy that he claims are "German Occupation" money. IF it is true, I need to add these coins to my "want list".

If not, it's just one more bad e-bay seller...

Yes, the zinc 1923 coins (10 and 20 gr) were struck in the early 1940s without the date change and were used during the occupation.

Krause does have these listed under "WWII German Occupation" (Y#37 for the 20 Groszy) and it does state that they were minted from 1941-44 for the 10 and 20 Groszy but are dated 1923.

There is also a 1938 50 Groszy in iron, struck during German occupation. Third Reich was not very imaginative with its coins.

A said above, when the Germans took Poland, they minted a number of the 'in circulation' types in Zinc from 1940-1942, while the 50Gr comes in two Iron varieties as well. One of the coins (the 10Gr or 20Gr) has a slightly changed design from its pre-war state; from memory, the only coin 'dated' almost correctly is the Holed 5Gr of 1939. I've got MOST of the Generalgouvernment issues, just missing the 5Gr and the rare of the 50Gr type.

Also of interest to you then, will be the Bohem und Moravia issues and the Reichskreditkassen issues. AND depending on how large you wish to widen your scope, there will also be issued from France, Netherlands, Belgium, Denmark, Norway, etc, that were minted during occupation; Most are in Zinc, with the occasional Iron and Aluminium.

The Nazi's were (in some ways) and organised bunch... When they rolled into town, material classed as War Resources (especially Nickel) and Precious Metals were immediately 're-channeled', despite the fact the material shortages that plagued the later war years, had yet to emerge.
