Shadow Not convinced it's genuine (I'd have to put it on the scale to be sure), but it's real close to the genuine article. The color and Liberty's nose have me guessing. Here are side-by-sides for comparison. The real deal is on the left.   |

The coin looks real enough to me, the seller is another story. The man says he just now bought a grading book, i.e., he's willing to sell a coin w/o even knowing it's worth. Doesn't sound quite right. The thing with forgeries is that it seems they're being replicated from real coins. I guess a clay mold is made of a real coin and then a die cast or something like that. So, just by looking you couldn't tell. You'd need to test the metal content and age, too.

It does look real enough, but I would have to agree with SeatedNut. The best way to tell is with a gram scale and they are quite inexpensive. If it is fake it would most likely be too light...Wayne

I do think its fake, but yeah seatednut you have a good point, the replicas are getting TOO close for comfort.

That would be a fake---details in the hair and hat are wrong, the face does not look right and the eagles feathers are wrong in the "armpits"

Appears to be a VF-35/EF-40 O-110/R-2.

I din't bother to grade it, but I came up with O-110 as well. I think it is probably real.

Unless you compare the OP Coin with the same variety (Overton) coin, You may as well be comparing apples to oranges.
In 1825 there were 15 Obv. Dies & 16 Rev. Dies producing 18 different Die Marriages.
I agree with Bonedigger and Condor on this one 100%. I wouldn't have hesitated to bid on that coin for the price range it sold in. Wish I had seen it, I wouldn't bid on a coin from the forum if I knew somebody here was interested in it however.

I also feel that this coin is real. It is very easy to be mislead by this series because there are so many die variations. (This is actually what makes this series so interesting and fun in my opinion.) I'm glad that you posted this question. This is a very educational thread for those who are not familiar with the capped bust half dollar coins.  |
