I found this lovely specimen today. But it has this pretty rough stuff going on in the lips and nose. Does this kill the grade of this coin? Would these be considered "bag marks" or? Any insight would be great!

Probably bag marks, agree. Just a common date in AU condition with a value that will track bullion prices.

Looks like bag marks and not large enough to be considered PMD. Looks high AU and worth about $30 these days.

Yes probably worth around melt, they look like bag marks. This is one that could grade AU58 on a bad day and MS61 on a good day. However, I wouldn't ever send it for grading, not worth the fee. Marks take down the grade yes, depending on the severity, the depth, the size, the amount etc. It also depends on the remaining lustre amongst other things. Wear is the main thing to look at for grading a coin, but sometimes coins have weak strikes and look worn and actually are not. If there are quite a lot of deep marks then it can be graded a 'details' coin which is not a straight grade and takes considerable value away from the coin. Take a look at NGC and Heritage Auctions sold pages for graded examples of Morgan dollars. They are one of the best coins to learn to grade.

Current melt value on this coin is under $17. It's worth far more than that. Likely double.

Morgan silver dollars that are not severely damaged bring significant premiums to melt value. If silver were to go over $40 that might change but with silver anywhere in the $20 range? These days it's realistic to consider double melt value as a baseline for Morgan silver dollars in decent shape.

I agree, AU-58, with bag marks. Your photos are excellent!
