So just a simple cleaning brings the value of a coin from $140 to $40? I just don't get it. I don't know why it makes no sense to me that there would be such a huge difference between the two.

People like collect original (uncleaned) coins. There is a much larger market for original coins, and unfortunately a cleaned coin will bring significantly less (usually more than 50%) of the uncleaned counterpart.
