I've been having a lot of trouble lately. Thefts from the mailbox made me get a PO box. Especially the last one, which was supposed to be a signature, but was signed by the driver because Covid is more important than honoring a service agreement. Then there was the "not as described" guinea that weighed 3.2 grams instead of 8.4.
The most recent one was the worst. A FedEx delivery tossed on the porch in a ripped bubble wrap envelope. No coin inside needless to say.
Word to the wise dealers:

I live in an apartment building and lately the carriers leave the items in the lobby and mark it as "left at front door".

That sucks! It a shame that this happens. It happened to me once on a tracked package - fortunately I get text messages when marked as 'delivered'. When I get the text, I'm out the door to get it. the post person was still there and NO package. So I ask the delivery person where he left it - he stated "by front door" So I look - no package, and I wont let him leave and tell him that I will check my camera that covers my front door AND mail box - all of a sudden - he finds in on the floor of his truck. Needless to say, I reported him to the post office. luckily my interaction and his was recorded on video, which I gave to the postal inspector. (Never saw that guy again).

thanks. I sure scared him into giving up my package (it was a very expensive one), which is why I was at home waiting for it, did not want to let it hang out for too long unprotected.

Almost of of the coins acquired into my collection over my numismatic life of many decades have been inspected in hand before purchase, and have taken personal delivery by myself.
It has been decades since I have received coins from overseas by registered post. If this method is still considered by other coin collectors, pick a secure package from the post Office, rather than have it delivered to your home.
I still use public auction with view days, coin shows, and LCS's. It may be useful on some occasions for your friendly LCS to acquire a coin on your behalf, for your personal pick up.

One other word to the wise for buyers. Use PayPal or a credit card with buyer protection. Two of my lost shipments were reimbursed for non-delivery, and the guinea for "not as described". The one that I paid cash for (a PayPal cash transfer, but paying by check would have been the same) was my only loss.

Quote: now we have rules to play by? Mannn..... Normally we do not discuss this, as it is forbidden by our own sales rules, but for clarity I will spell it out for everyone... Never, ever buy anything from a seller insisting you use PayPal "gift" to avoid the fees. This gives you ZERO protection as a buyer. If they insist, move along.

I don't use Paypal at all. The only place I ever used it was ebay buying coins, and someone hacked it (clearly via ebay) and tried to "gift" themselves $149. I only caught it because I religiously inspect my credit card bills. That said, I've never had a problem with coin deliveries, but other problems make me nervous. They've delivered my wife's 401k statement to the wrong address (oh, great), my daughter's vehicle registration renewal recently went to an address miles away, our mailboxes are unsecured, I frequently get mail intended for neighbors. I have a PO box but even then I get mail intended for other PO boxes. The honesty of other people is our last line of defense. It's a crap shoot.

The seller I lost money on said the fees were too high for him and to do a PayPal cash transfer instead. I paid 3% for that service, with no protection. To his credit, the seller used USPS signature. That's when I found out that USPS was letting drivers sign and leaving items in the mailbox. I also found out that the USPS indemnity for this is a pittance, $30 I believe. Even if the coin had been insured (another mistake by the seller), USPS would waive any responsibility since the driver had proof that he delivered it to the mailbox. I found his signature on the delivery form at the post office.

thq-you might even have to watch out with a PO Box. A few weeks ago I had a replacement credit card that was sent via normal usps mail delivery and it never even made it into my mailbox because a postal worker noticed that the envelope contained a credit card (also a sarcastic thanks to Chase for sending it already authorized) and grabbed it with the rest of my mail. The next morning I was alerted by text of a $710 transaction at a local store in town and I had to cancel the replacement card without having it ever touch my hands.
Regarding the driver signing for your package because of COVID, that also happened to me the very next day. I was told by the post office supervisor that they are no longer allowed to do that so you should probably contact your local PO and let them know that it happened.

Quote: USPS would waive any responsibility since the driver had proof that he delivered it to the mailbox. And I would have proof that he didn't as I have a camera pointed right at my mailbox - if the post office say it was delivered at a day/time and it really wasn't, I can prove that it wasn't actually delivered to my address. A drivers signature (not mine) will be - and HAD been debunked with my video proof that the driver did not deliver it at that day/time.
