Hi all Any idea what the common lettering looks like if not curved or flat? Seems a tad strange. Anyway is the attached Calcutta flat or curved? Low grade coins so won't matter much probably but curious. Easy to tell the difference on reverse.
The Indian obverse is scarce. The flat based lettering on the indian obverse is rarer than the scarce curved based lettering on the indian obverse. Hope that makes sense!!!. Can't tell which you have though.
Thanks airgem. I am trying to locate pics that show the difference between curved based letters on the obverse and flat based on the obverse. Every one I look at seems flat based but I am not 100% sure what to look for on the obverse.
Start counting the denticles 178 Indian 177 English and something about a letter in between denticles or on a denticle that I cant remember which is easier reference if you can remember instead of counting denticles. Did that make sense?
Thanks NZ. The N in OMN shows the English (between denticles) and the Indian (hitting the denticle). It is the flat based and curved based obverse lettering that I am having difficulty distinguishing.
For me the true Flat based lettering stands out. Curved based is a bit confusing as there is also partial curved based lettering. Curved based lettering on some letters adds to the confusion. As the die wears the letters appear to flatten out but does not look like the real flat based. So when in doubt it is most probably curved base as Flat based is instantly recognisable.
