@grim, first welcome to CCF. Second, as noted above, the rim gets rolled over onto the surface of the coin when it is damaged in a very particular way (I.e. via spooning or rotary machinery damage. From a numismatic standpoint, it is only worth face value, but as a curiosity that clearly was important to your dad, you should consider saving it for the sentimental value.
