I was watching an auction on ebay for a lot of four denarii which contained a Pertinax. The other three coins look authentic but I don't know about the Pertinax. Here's the auction link: https://www.ebay.com/itm/304511806484Thoughts? Paul Bulgerin

Really hard to say. It looks ok but there are a lot of good fakes. It's perhaps a little too silvery. Not the sort of coin to buy on ebay without provenance.

Sounds like you have the same problem I did with a lot. The common emperors were authentic, but, can you guess which one was the fake?

How did you work out it was fake?

When I got it in hand, I was suspicious but I didn't care because I got the lot for a very good price. I actually, found a duplicate of the Clodius Albinus up for auction on ebay. The seller offered a refund, but I kept the coins. The price was even lower than what the other 3 were worth.

Since the question was asked by the OP, I looked at that coin in particular , and in comparison with the others. Since I have the pictures only, my opinion is based on that evidence only.
My 'gut' feeling is that the Pertinax could be a pressure die cast fake.
The detail is much better that a normal cast fake, but there is still enough 'mushiness' in the detail (if the molds were from an original), and overall luster leaves me somewhat suspicious. When looking at the flan cracks I cannot see a sign of tensile metal distress inside the crack at 10 0'clock on the reverse of the Pertinax, when compared to the cracks on the Antonininus Pius coin. Taking these observations together, I would be very inclined to give the Pertinax a miss.
Nevertheless I would much rather to closely examine the coin in hand, if I were to consider to buy it.

One thing's for sure - I definitely wouldn't bid $700+ on it!

An online friend, from another coin group where I had also posted about this coin, messaged me today that he was the one who purchased this lot of coins.
He told me that he found a die match to the Pertinax denarius and is confident that the coin is authentic.

Quote: ... he found a die match Boy, I hope the other coin was deemed authentic by a professional. Finding a die matches could be scary..

A die match could just as easily be the sign of a pressure cast from an original host.

I take Maridvnvm's point.
I would not completely dismiss the coin, without a close in hand examination.
