I'm not sure if the reverse is oriented correctly. Don't have the coin in hand, but think it's about the size of a cent or nickel. I also think it's billon/silver.

Resembles a Hadrian from Alexandria, with clasped hands reverse. But I don't know if those came in denominations smaller than tetradrachms. If yours is the size of a penny or nickel, it may be too small for that.

Thanks, Bob L. I reoriented the reverse. I think you found a likely match.

@otto, I'm pretty sure that what @Bob was saying is that this piece appears to be a match for the design elements but not the diameter (roughly 20 mm for this piece vs. a pretty consistent 24 mm for a text). In that case, this piece may be a cast fantasy rather than an actual coin. I would be careful with one.

And @bob, if I am misunderstanding what you wrote, then I'm sorry about that.

Spence, I certainly hope it's not a fantasy coin. I posted one coin out of a dozen coin lot, which I have since won. When I said cen/nickel size it was just a guess. Here is the auction: 325225260087

Ok yep, I think that it is impossible to tell from the seller's pics whether it is 21 or 24 mm in diameter. Assuming that it ends up being close to the correct diameter, consider doing a specific gravity test right away when it arrives to make sure it is silver. Also maybe some some good pics to this thread when you have it in hand. Thx.

I'd be surprised if it wasn't real, but it's the coin worth the lot price.

You got it right, Dave. But I am encouraged by the fact that the OP coin, as it appears in the link, is one of the two largest coins in the group. It is, obviously, of a larger denomination than the coins below it in the group photo. Environmental damage, chipping, and simply being struck on a slightly small flan, might be the simple explanation here. Like John, I'd be surprised if it is not kosher.

I've finally gotten around to revisiting this topic, now that I have the coin. Unfortunately, I haven't been able to improve on original pics. But I have some specs: Diameter ~22 ml (see new pic), weight = 10.79g, not silver(did specific gravity test - got reading below 9). Non-magnetic.

It is a bit small and a bit light. The surfaces aren't great and the features a little fuzzy. So it could be a cast forgery. The edge might tell you more.

But this was a billon coin (so wouldn't pass a specific gravity test for silver) and came in a wide range of weights and sizes. What is too light when some are 8g and some 13g? They are often porous (because it's billon not silver) and fuzzy e.g. https://www.vcoins.com/en/stores/lo...230/amp.aspx

So I would imagine it is real, and somewhat worn and weathered.
