The search shown below garners 11,551 results using either option. If I use the option "search for all words", I get zero results. I use the Google Custom Forum Search tool just above it on the Search page. It seems to work better and faster. I usually only search for one "word", so I get the results I need most of the time. However, when searching multiple words I get incorrect results.
