Sap Moderator Australia 16806 Posts	Posted 06/23/2022 8:43 pm Marseilles couldn't use just "M", because the "M" mintmark was already being used by the Toulouse mint. So they picked an "MA" monogram. France had more regional mints than there were letters in the alphabet, so once they ran out of letters, subsequent mints had to get... creative. One mint, Aix, used the ampersand symbol (&).
