I think all of the u.s.mint modern circulated coins will be so widely hoarded that they wont be worth saveing/ideled inventory its like putting your money to sleep for what everyone and there mom collects them,i think that the sacs will go up in value because none of them were released in general circulation except for the year 2000 what do you think ?

Well, couple of comments. Getting modern coins is cheap - often at face. if you are a "collector", that's a pretty good deal. However, hoarding is a slightly different story. If you bought 500 rolls of the State Quarters, you have put that money to sleep - as you say.

However, hoarding has always existed - just on a smaller scale. The No-Cents nickel, the 1950-D nickel, and so on. Do you really, really, really think a 1949-S Roosevelt in MS-63 condition is as rare as the catalog price indicates? No WAY! There are just a whole lot of people who have hoarded these dimes. There are thousands and thousands of them out there in MS shape - not in the market place but in some old guy's safe.

Saving coins that were never meant for circulation is kind of a crap shoot. Remember, they will ALL be GEM/BU and they will all have been saved (for the most part). It's the BU 19th century stuff that was hoarded that is worth big money. Most silver coinage dating as far back as the late 1800's is only worth melt value in G/VG condition.

The point of this ramble is that you need to "hoard" something that many, many, many people will want in 10, 20 or 30 years. Ah... That is the trick!

For the record......"my" Mom doesn't collect or "hoard" any coins....
I don't think the average ole BU Sac will ever be worth actually "hoarding". There may be a modest premium on those in time....no one knows for sure.
But as pointed out.....the existing ones N.I.F.C. are going to MOSTLY be in great condition anyway.
The new "Sac" or " Native American dollar" will circulate (supposedly) so...... maybe something there...but doubtful....same difference really.
If they do away with the "paper dollar" then we would see massive amounts of these "dollar coins" coming out and circulating for sure.

I think the St. Qtr. Sets top value will be fleeting once it reaches it's peak.....then it'll go back down and stay there for some time.

But really the term "hoarding" kind of implies silver/gold/platinum....or coins already with high value and consistently maintain that high value.

"Hoarding" something that's cheap to buy now......with future obscene profits expected is a very rare success rate I would think. But if you come up with a sure bet......LET ME KNOW !.....

Kabiye_Lady so the people that are hoarding might spend, loose in theft/fire there hoarded coins within 30 years and make the ones that survive worth more or will everyone that saves the coins for 30 years will break them all out and profit in 30 years or will time just increase there value ? thanks in advance!

Would a roll of unc nickels be able to grade MS40? if so then look at the PCGS price of an MS40 westward Journey nickel.

I dont spend them b/c potentially it could be a bullion coin... I know it sounds crazy but they are 75% copper and 25%nickel and they were last year more than 5 cent a piece at one time... I know noone will buy them from me at more when they can go to the bank at get them at face but one day they wont be able to b/c composition will be different

Hoarding copper cents and nickels makes perfect sense to me (if you need to hoard something). Got both numismatic and metal value going for you!

The track record for popularly hoarded items is very poor. The key is demand. One can easily come up with dozens (or hundreds) of examples of very low mintage coins that are worth very little because there is little demand.

Loss due to early spending, theft, fire, etc. happens of course, but is most likely a very small percentage. On the other hand, I am sure there are hundreds of mint sets in landfills.

Hoarders win big time when something unexpected happens. As Eaglefoot mentions, if the dollar bill were to be abolished, that would TOTALLY change the radar screen for SAC and SBA valuations. What is also ironic about this is that SACs and SBAs are about the last thing people hoard - so it would be poetic justice.

I personally find myself beginning to hoard copper LMCs (much to the chagrin of my wife) but have actually thought of possibly hoarding dollar bills. It seems to me they have the biggest chance of extinction in the foreseeable future (along with the cent), making their numismatic value potentially rise. Plus if nothing does happen to our dollar bill...I can always spend it.
