Just on the news this morning was some stores in Massachusetts are now refusing to accept the Cent. If this catches on, maybe change is coming soon. (pun intended) Regarding the shell casings, with the economy in such disorder, perhaps the Government should pay closer attention to military waste

Interesting.

Was wondering how a store could refuse to accept legal tender without frustrating customers. The answer: always round DOWN to the nearest nickel.

Outrageous I say! Big deal if they round down to the nearest nickel (which in some cases will only be 1 cent). What if I dont have a nickel in my pocket But I pull out 5 Abes?

I doubt the stores are overly concerned with someone paying with a few cents as few people actually spend them, they can just take them to the bank. They are probably more annoyed at having to give them out to almost every customer who pays with cash.

A lot of the smaller convenience stores around here round everything to the nearest nickel. They will however accept cents. Therefore I use all my dump zinc cents 1)to get rid of them, 2)so I don't get shorted, and 3)just for the good 'ol reason that they don't like to deal with them.

If they are only concerned about having to give out cents to their customers as change...they can do the obvious reduction to the next lowest nickel Without refusing to accept cents. I think they just want to be in the spotlight for awhile. Five minutes of fame!

A quote from the story steve199 linked to:

Quote:
Their goal is to convince President Obama to sign an executive order saying businesses can refuse pennies if they round down the purchase to the nearest nickel.

Doesn't congress have sole authority when it comes to coinage? If the President actually did this, (which I doubt) I would have to think it would set off a power struggle with congress?

Well, now I suppose I went and made this thread political!

One more thing....

As a Lincoln fan (both the cent and the man) I think it's pretty low choosing his birthday as the day they refuse to accept a coin with his image on it!

Just my two-Lincolns worth...

As long as they post a notice where it is visible before customers enter the store, I cannot see how anyone can stop them, other than by refusing to shop there.

From a retail standpoint this is a good idea. Anyone that has ever had to ring a register can easily see why this will save time and speed transactions. I hope this catches on.

I also think that Lincoln may not have wanted his name associated with a relic that has become just another example of government waste.

I have worked a retail register for years. Agreed, giving back change does take a little time. But if a customer pays with cash... you have little choice but to give them their change and it only takes a second to slide a couple of cents out of the drawer. On the other hand, with the decline of the dollar and very little purchasing power, Maybe we should round up to the $2.00 bill! Wait a minute...retailers hate those too! Let's just round up to the $5.00 bill! Honest Abe will love that!

I though it was illegal not to except any legal tender in commerce.
