I didn't see anyone post this about the Lincoln Cent from the NY Times a couple of days ago...

Very interesting article. I really hadn't thought of the fact that in 1909 only Lady Liberty had been on US coins. This makes me even happier that Lincoln's image has not been altered over the past century.

And by 1948 she was gone from circulation coins...

Read that informative article, and you'll see the reason why.
Once we had a popular coin with an iconic president on it,
that opened the door for Washington, Jefferson, Franklin Roosevelt,
Ben Franklin, John Kennedy, etc. to replace Lady Liberty.

The loss of the symbolic representation of liberty was a very bad move, in my opinion. No matter which living person is placed on a coin, there will always be people who don't like it. I suppose that Washington, and maybe Lincoln don't generate any controversy (but you never know).

No. Lincoln is controversial to many. I know some may not believe this -- it has nothing to do with slavery, but rather upon his disregard for the Constitution. Do a search on Amazon for Thomas Dilorenzo.

It has been argued that Lincoln could have avoided the civil war. He was supposedly advised that an independent South would not survive the long term and would be forced to rejoin the Union out of necessity. However, Lincoln would not stand idly by; not on his watch, as it were. We remember him for the ends, not for the means.

No President, nor any human for that mater, is perfect. Any real person that is depicted on a coin will have detractors.
