Abraded in a horizontal fashion. Imagine a cent stuck between a heavy wooden pallet (with a load) and a smooth concrete floor--and the pallet being shoved across the floor. And in the course of being in the warehouse, the cent gets flipped as the pallet is lifted and it (unluckily) gets trapped again. If coins could talk...

Yes, as John stated, cropping is very important - especially if the coin being presented is an actual error, it would allow more details to be shown.
