Won this beauty at auction recently. Price was very good but communication from the auction house was poor after payment. Very happy to have it arrive today. Certainly among the nicest 1 cent errors I now own. CCCS Red MS-63. Am I correct in my suspicion that was a manufactured error? Could this have happened naturally?

I don't know enough about this kind of error comment on authenticity but I can say if it is authentic it is not just double struck. As far as I know you cannot have two sets of seperate rims in a double struck coin but I'll let the experts clarify.

It almost looks like two coins to me, like one folded over another, any idea on the weight?

Congrats!! I saw this one, but then forgot about it . Definitely a legit production error. The stiff collar is what causes the significant lip. This struck coin was not entirely ejected from the striking chamber, and it rested on the collar die while a new planchet was loaded. These error types are scarce when you get more than 15% overlap, and this one definitely has the eye-appeal. Now, you only need to find the other coin that this one was struck upon (which created that uniface obverse) and you will have a mated pair. Mated pairs are highly desirable and valuable.

Thanks everyone! Yes it is one planchet. Glad to know that is a real and lovely error.
I don't know the weight as CCCS doesn't note that on the holders. I could try weighing it if anyone happens to know how much the CCCS soft holders weigh empty.

When I asked single planchet I wasn't saying the error is not legit, as I said from the start I won't question authentication because it looks like an error to me off first glance. To me it just looks like more metal then an average cent but I have no view of the coin for thickness. I'm sure the TPG weighed the coin but it just looks like two coins to me from the pics.
