This is an 1856 Japanese nibu at 5.62 g @ 7k

these as far as I know were made to fit into the hilt or tsuka of a katana

Truly interesting. Is it possible to put up some pictures with some other object that would indicate the size of this coin?

nuggethill- Wow! That is nice! Is that gold? If it is gold, then it is not a BU, rather it is a much higher denomination.

NumisMattyUk- That most certainly is a coin rather than exonumia.

Very nice NI BU-BAN KIN, these coins are a mixture of .209 gold and .791 silver. As a long time collector of Japanese Swords I've never seen a Tsuka the was able hold these inside. They were usually kept in a pouch attached to the obi by a netsuke, or in a wallet inside the inner garments.

hmm.... I remember seeing on flickr there were some special swords made solely to carry coins in the sword

Well that's interesting, never saw that before. Sword #1 appears to be a doctor's sword no real blade, #'s 2 & 3 Tanto's. While these were not used very often, if they had to used money would be flying everwhere when the blade was drawn. That's for the picture.
