Both of these notes are unlisted in the Virginia Obsolete Guide and were not previously known to exist. N.M. Ronald, who is listed on the notes, was a bank teller for the bank and was found to be embezzling money. Ronald's modus operandi involved him instructing patrons to write him checks that would supposedly pay off account deficits. Blacksburg is home to the ever-growing Virginia Tech and banknotes from Blacksburg are extremely rare. Hokiefan should like these.

Interesting fractional obsoletes WB. This was an interesting time for Virginia. Some of citizens supported slavery and some, mostly from the western areas of Virginia remained loyal to the Union. The state split and the two sides never reconciled again.

Nice notes. It looks like back in the day, in order to redeem these the owner had to have them bundled in amounts of $5.00 or more to get any value from them.

Almost like 'savings bonds'

Very interesting. As a kid I used to go around asking adults, "Guess which state extends further west, Virginia or West Virginia", and wondered why they always got it right.

KUDOS on these cool finds .... This is what I love most about numismatics. It involves finding items that few, if any collectors have seen before; this, while attaching intriguing historical backstories to the items!

This reminds me, I have a few, contemporary, merchant-counterstamped obsolete notes I could post. These have interesting backstories, too.
