I've started collecting Kennedys in a Dansco. But reading more and more in this forum, and experiencing some of the higher prices for certain JFKs, I was wondering what people thought about key, or perhaps better termed as semi-key, dates for the JFKs.

Here is the list I put together:

1964 Proof Accented Hair Variety (not in Dansco);
1970 D;
1974 D Doubled Die Obverse (error coin not in Dansco);
1995 S Silver Proof;
1997 S Silver Proof;
1998 S Silver matter proof (not in Dansco).

I was thinking about starting a slab collection of these coins. Any thoughts about the dates (or whether there is even such a thing as key Kennedys)?

The 1998 matte proof might be considered a key. But as far as keys go, it would be a cheap one. :)

How can I determine if I have a 64' Accented Hair specimen? How do they differ from Normal 64's?

Unfortunately, I do not believe that they carry much of a premium.

There was some talk about 2008 being a "Key" date as well

Tpatna...I've heard the same. It's hard for me to relate the term "Key Date" to a 2008 coin though.

Very tough to say unless you define "key" date very precisely for yourself.

In a huge series such as the Kennedy one, the keys of today may not be the keys of tomorrow. If silver proofs become popular (or are ignored), the status of that type of Kennedy will change dramatically.

Some would say anything after 2001, since they were never put in circulation officially and have low mintages.

Others might say that MS-67-70 are what is "key". In other words, a 1970-D may be a "key", but it's not really that rare unless it's in the ultimate MS grades

If you set your sights low for what a "key" is, you'll end up collecting about 3/4 of the set and if you're really strict about what a "key" is, there probably isn't one for the Kennedy series.

Now, does that confuse you? Well, it sure does confuse me!

When I started this thread, I noted that "key" for this series may really mean what "semi-key" does for other coins.

I am looking at buying the best grade I can of keys, or if you prefer semi-keys... I'd buy them in slabs, and putting them to the side for a few decades. I am looking for semi-keys as they are something that I can afford, hping that the price will rise in value.

The 6 coins I listed are the ones I was thinking about doing that with. I don't know the mintage for the 2008 silver proofs in this group too, the other thread discussed the P & D mints.

As to the Silver proof coins, here are the series that are under 1,000,000 in mintage:

1993 S Silver Proof - mintage 761,353;
1994 S Silver Proof - mintage 785,329;
1995 S Silver Proof - mintage 838,953;
1996 S Silver Proof - mintage 755,021;
1997 S Silver Proof - mintage 741,678;
1998 S Silver Proof - mintage 878,792;
1999 S Silver Proof - mintage 800,000;
2000 S Silver Proof - mintage 856,400;
2001 S Silver Proof - mintage 889,697;
2002 S Silver Proof - mintage 892,229;
2007 S Silver Proof - mintage 677,996;
2008 S Silver Proof - mintage ?,?.

For some reason, the 1995 Silver averages higher than the other silvers, regardless of mintage numbers.
