hi folks

My grandfather has recently embraced the internet and ebay etc etc and has asked me to see if I can get rid of some of the old coins my gran collected.

He has a couple of bags full but I took out four that looked interesting to me. I'm looking for values as to what he might expect if I were to ebay it for him.

I have a Queen victoria 1887 (half crown I think)
a Padraig Pearse Irish shilling 1966 (50 yrs commemoration since Easter rising)
an 1892 Queen victoria sovereign

and the ones I tought were most interesting
Two hibernia coins 1782

I know the two Hibernia coins are pretty beat looking...should I try to clean up coins? does it increase the value? what chemicals?

Thanks in advance, hope you can help
Marc

Hi Marc,
welcome to the forum.
I can not comment on the coins but still have a few words to say;

one thing I've learned here is Do Not Clean the Coins! especially if you plan to sell them.
If you guys have a bunch of coins there, you need to sort them out. Sometimes very valuable coins appear in the last place you could imagine.
You may -just may- have coins minted in such dates that make them rare (thus valuable).
There are books that tell the price estimations of many many coins you could like to have one.
And if you have an intension to sell some coins on e-bay or elsewhere (not in this forum before you have 50 posts) you need to get a little into this hobby, so you can catch some details to make you know what you have.

just wait a little while, I'm sure someone will comment on the coins you have pictured.

Hi Marc

Welcome to the forum !!

Do not clean any of the coins !!!! Cleaning will decrease the value of your coins !!!

I am very new to foreign coins, I will leave the help on value to the more educated on these coins,, Please be patient there are folks here who are well versed on the coins you have pictured as they come in I'm sure the help you need will be gladly given!!

while we wait,, it would be a good thing to have both obverse and reverse pics,, these will help with Identification and a grade evaluation ,,

Here's some info for you on these. Values are based on the Krause catalogue, in US dollars. Putting them on ebay? Try starting, at most, a bit under these values.

Your 1887 silver coin (pics 424/425) is a British florin (not a halfcrown - they're slightly larger and have a single large coat of arms on them). Your example is fairly worn - CV at $5 to $10 or so?

Irish 10 shillings 1966 (pics 426/427)- even with 3/5ths of the total mintage melted down, these are still fairly common in high grade; they were the Irish Repiblic's first commemorative coin. CV $15 if genuinely Unc, $5 or so if they've seen circulation or rough handling.

British crown 1892 (pics 428/429) - not a sovereign, they're made of gold, and much smaller - CV $20 to $40 in that condition?

The bronze coin with the harp and King George III (pics 430/431) is either an official (Government issued) Irish halfpenny or a reasonably accurate copy. CV for 1782 in that condition is $2 to $5.

The other bronze (pics 432/433) took a while to find, but I found it - Ireland James II "Siege of Limerick" farthing, 1691 (KM# 107.1), with backwards N in Hibernia. The legend around the portrait should read, "IACOBUS II.DEI.GRATIA.". It's a scarcer coin; shame it's worn nearly flat. In that condition, I would guess a CV of $20 or so.
Don't say "infinitely" when you mean "very"; otherwise, you'll have no word left when you want to talk about something really infinite. - C. S. Lewis
