Hi all,

Just picked this one up on ebay, I don't even have it in hand yet. Based off of the seller's pictures, what would you all think on grade/surfaces?

It certainly looks like a nice lowball, so I'm eager to get it in hand and take some better pictures.

Unfortunately, no. They were the seller's, I don't have it in hand yet. Once it gets here I'll take some better ones.

I'm with the Frog - need better photos to judge the surfaces for originality, and will wait for the coin to arrive and you can post them.

I'm hopeful for you that you have found a nice original surfaces coin for your growing circulated commemorative set.

For a technical grade - this is likely solid AG03. Granted the PCGS wizards are hugely inconsistent when grading these seldom seen lowball commemorative, but here is my certified example for at least a comparison.

1920 Pilgrim Half - PCGS FR02

I think PCGS would grade it FR-AG details graffiti.

@ Worn Out - nice catch from those small photos. Agreed that sure looks like graffiti and that would be a shame for the OP's quest.

This is why understanding the surface conditions is nearly impossible from photos.

@ Silver Searcher, let us know what you find when the coin arrives.

Hey all!!

The coin has arrived, and I got back from a few days out of town so I finally got to see it!

It looks much better in person, sort of, I think the seller's pics were overlit. Maybe an old cleaning, but at first glance it looks original.

Some better pics:

The "M" scratched in the left field on the obverse is there, but not super obvious. The fact that Worn Out was able to spot it is a testament to his great experience with these coins. Seriously considering keeping it despite the graffiti.

What say you?

Thanks for the enlarged images!

My eyes see lots of hairlines that appear to indicate a mechanical cleaning. IMO, this one would come back with a "Details" designation from either PCGS or NGC. Others may have a different view, of course.

Looks like an old harsh cleaning. Might be a good one to carry around as a pocket piece for a while.

Thanks for the input all! You're right, the hairlines really do show up in the pictures quite obviously. However, with the coin in hand, they are hard to see.

I think I'm going to keep this one despite the issues - it's a clear lowball, at least in the level of wear, and I got it for a great price. I'll hold onto it until I spot another one (and then maybe keep it anyway.... you can never have too many commemoratives!!) Maybe if I find another example, I'll add this one to my pocket piece rotation and see what happens.

Thanks again! It's great to turn to CCF and get insight on these coins!

I will defer to one's own eye appeal over photos every time. I am glad you are satisfied!

Appreciate the enlarged photos. Concur it is a well worn lowball.
