What would you consider to be the best reference(s) on the classic commemorative series?

I think you would enjoy Q. David Bowers' Commemorative Coins of the United States: A Complete Encyclopedia and/or Anthony Swiatek's Encyclopedia of the Commemorative Coins of the United States. A third choice is a volume by Walter Breen and Anthony Swiatek - Encyclopedia of US Silver & Gold Commemorative Coins.

The QDB book (from 1991) was published in hardcover and softcover versions. I'm only aware of a hardcover version for the Swiatek volume (from 2012). The Breen/Swiatek was first published in hardcover (1981), but when updated several years later, it was printed as a softcover.

That should get you started!
