As I've mentioned in an earlier post, I've started picking up older editions of Friedberg's Paper Money of the United States reference. My main interest there is to see how the reference itself and Friedberg's cataloging system have evolved over the years. My oldest edition until now was the 1964 5th edition. Today I received a copy of the 1953 1st edition. I've seen a couple others for sale before, but they were either in very poor condition or were at a ridiculous price. This one, other than some staining on the cover, is in excellent condition. Pages are all clean without any markings, discoloration or tears, and the binding is completely intact. It was $16 including shipping on ebay. I've also got a 1959 3rd edition on its way to me now, and it looked practically new in the pics. And it was under $10 including shipping...  |

 I'm a researcher at heart, and while my library is pretty skimpy compared to a lot of those on this forum, it's steadily growing! I even recently bought a new copy of Pollock's 1994 reference on U.S. patterns, and I don't even collect patterns!  Member of SPMC, FCCB, ANA and ANS. Pretty skimpy? This is pretty skimpy, no first editions anywhere. I have a few more redbooks also, but I was planning on giving those away, so this is it for now.  |

Those mega red books can either build up your muscle or break your wrist.

If you have too many mega red books together they can merge into a black hole, so you have to be careful if buying the whole series.

Looks like a good selection of references, hfjacinto!
I'm a big fan of the Mega Red books, but they do take up a lot of space!

@hfjacinto, I don't have any of the Mega Red books, but was thinking of getting a 1st or 2nd edition just for the expanded sections on cents, of which I'm a big fan.

@speeddemon don't get too many. See post above about forming a black hole if you get too many. And don't ever drop a mega Red Book. It will continue falling until it hits earth core! |

@hfjacinto, I'd only plan on getting two, so no worries about black holes forming. And I will be careful not to drop these, as I'd be nervous I'd break a foot.

I'm at almost 5000 volumes now and I don't have one of those yet, I do have a few later editions. Not in a hurry as I don't really dabble in currency, but always nice to have a first edition in the library.

Wow, westcoin, that's quite a library you have there! I've only got about 50 books in my numismatic library, though I'm actively working to add a lot of key references to it now. I've taken quite an interest in the Friedberg U.S. paper money references, so have been picking up older editions off of ebay. I had been on the lookout for this one for a while, and just today received the 3rd edition. Edited by hokiefan_82

@commems, I agree. Since I'm still fairly new to collecting currency, my numerous references on U.S. and Confederate currency are getting used a lot! BTW, while I have the Mega RedBook and some other comprehensive guides to U.S. coinage, I don't have any references dedicated specifically to U.S. classic commemorative coinage. What would you consider to be the best reference(s) on the classic commemorative series (well, other than your very informative and extensive list of topics on this forum, which I refer to regularly!). Thanks! |
