This was in the mail today. I traded it for a 1 oz silver bullion coin that goes for around 35€. Its toned but actually still mostly frosty, so I am pleased (did not count on that). What would you grade it? Is it a mid-to-high AU? Edited by HP2001PH 07/19/2022 1:53 pm

It sorta looks like an AU-50ish to me, at most an 53...

Looks AU-53 to me. Not a lot of wear but luster is lacking.

I'll say AU-55, perhaps 58. Not uncirculated.

AU-50 to AU-53. A lot of light on the surface of the coin, so hard to guess with precision.

reverse may help it get to AU53. might clean up with some acetone.
the 1900(P) are usually on the soft side of strike so some of what we are seeing is strike related but I cant get it to 55 due to eye appeal and luster

Will acetone remove toning?

Quote: Will acetone remove toning? No. but if you do make sure you only use pure acetone not nail polish remover and rinse good with distilled water and let it fully dry. its worth a shot and may help eye appeal a little. I dont think it will alter the grade but the dirt/grime is pretty heavy so you never know whats under it. the bad side is it might enhance any scratches or marks its hiding.

I will think about trying it. If I do, I will again post pics.

Try soap and water first and either pat dry with a micro fiber towel or dry with compressed air! That way you might be able see some luster.
At first glance this coins obv appeared XF and AU rev.

I'd say AU53. Not a favorite.

I had a go with the soap & water. Luster is only there in remnants. But looks have improved, the grit was a bit unattractive.

I believe the coin is AU now, all the older grading books kind of indicate the necessity for some luster to be present on AU coins but I'm not sure that is much of a requirement anymore.
