Next years I plan to buy for my set are 1879 and 1888.

This offer on ebay caught my eye:

https://www.ebay.de/itm/165566331420

Do you think it may be MS? It looks frosty, but the hair over the eye looks a little worn, though I know that can be from a weaker strike too.

EDIT: I see now the luster is definitely rubbed away in some places on the cap, over the ear and on the eagles breast. That means it will be an AU-58 probably?

Do you think the price is appropriate?

Hard to buy from these photos. They show a lifeless coin. It could just be the pictures or it could be the coin has been dipped too many times, but it shows little luster. Contact mark wise, the coin is pretty clean, I don't see what I would consider circulation wear.

Hm, most of the coins from this seller are looking kind of muted.

Maybe its the way he makes the pictures.

Even highly reflective relatively new silver coins are looking lifeless, consider:

It is really hard to make good pictures of coins, that give a good idea of how the coin looks in real life.....

If it's not MS then it's high AU. My guess from the images would be MS62 or AU58. If not for the apparent lack of luster I would have guessed a bit higher.

At least AU-58, possibly MS-63. The apparent lack of luster may be due to suboptimal lighting.

I do agree, their other listings have very muted luster as well. I would assume AU-58 for pricing and if you get the coin and it has complete luster, then you made out well. Contact mark wise, it is in the realm of a 63/64.

For AU-58 the price would be a little high, right?

Yeah, it would be. Highly recommend numismedia for a good pricing starting point.

I agree that the seller photos are a little muted. I am at AU58. If you like it, make an offer on what you are willing to pay.

ericgreen,

wow, thank you for the helpful link!

Slider23,

Unfortunately no offers are possible.
Anyway none over the eBay-interface. I guess I could write him a message.

I would send the seller a message with your offer.

I am not sure how the ebay Europe works. On the old US ebay BIN (Buy It Now) system, the seller had to discount the coin on the listing if the offer was accepted, but anyone could buy the coin at the new discount price. Today with a BIN listing, the seller can accept an offer or make a counter offer with the eBay-interface.

Worst case AU-58 "slider unc". If the cartwheel luster is there across all the devices, then MS-64 would not surprise.

Can't read the language, but certainly would not buy without full return privileges.

Thats actually a good point. Yes, the coin can be returned since it is a professional dealer. So I will post some hopefully better pictures once I have it.

Btw the pictures all look so dull because they are scanned, not taken with a camera.
