Howdy, New to the neighborhood, hope I'm posting this in the correct forum. Just wanted to share a fake French Indo-China 1 piastre I found on ebay the other day ([eBayItem]250370750314[/eBayItem]), world coin buffs will spot the problem quickly I bet.  Thanks to this site I was able to send it along to ebay. I copied the photo to post here (hope that is allowed) for educational purposes (what not to buy). I can't tell that that coin is fake from that picture; the picture's so terrible it looks coppery. If you look at all the other coins from this seller, all his "silver" coins look coppery. I think it's just really bad lighting.
Yes, he lists it as a "1918", a non-existent date, but he also calls it a "pieasta", so I don't think this seller pays much attention to detail. The threes on these coin are very "eight-like"; it might be a 1913. I enhanced the pic and still couldn't tell whether he last digit in the date is an 8 or a 3.
The edge looks a little iffy, but other than that, I can't see a problem. What gives it away as a fake, to you?

Wow, good eye, Sap. The photo is terrible and I just assumed the 8 without looking closer, but enhancing the photo some makes it appear more to be like a 3. Really hard to tell.

Yes , you bloodhounds are on the trail. I enhanced and zoomed when I first saw it to be certain, it is 1918. Maybe only a few thousand in existence but probably not one to be sending in for certification eh? Image: http://www.coincommunity.com/forum/...piastrex.jpg |

Here is the one I received mixed in with a lot of world silver coins, a much poorer quality fake but it had undoubtedly been through several hands before reaching mine. It is rather charming in it's audacity.   Dang it, still fumbling a bit with posting images. |

I fixed the images; just click the "Edit Reply" icon to see what I did. All you need is the URL of the image, encased in [IMG] tags.

This is indeed very interesting as I wanted to improve my "fake coins technology" knowledge on different ebay sellers. When I access that link it says "Bidding has ended for this item". It seems I'm out of luck today Edited by HenryTheCoin
