Poll Question
So today I bought some Canadian mint sets. I found that for a few of them from the 1980s each coin separately would add up to a value greater than that of the set itself. So when you guys encounter this issue do you normally keep your sets together or break them open and feel as though you have seemingly made a profit? haha

If the packaging is actually working as far as protecting the coin from the elements, yes, keep them in there - it's doing just as good a job (if not better) than the 2x2's I'd otherwise put them in.
Once the plastic starts to break and degrade, rip 'em out.

I suppose they could be sold individually and be "worth more" than the set as a whole, but you must find a buyer for every coin in the set which might be more difficult. I only buy one mint set per year to break open and add to my coin album.

I break them up if there's any interesting coins. The 1969 set had an original purchase price of $4, and the 2009 Charlton lists the set at $4. How's that for a 40 year investment!

For me it depends of coin safety and if I need the coin for an album!

I prefer to leave them intact. However I was recently forced to break open a 1967 set as it arrived with the packaging damaged.

Is there not a danger of damaging the coins especially when breaking in to those hard plastic protectors that come with proof sets? Also, when handling the coins themselves do you use gloves, or is that just being over cautious?

If they have lasted 20+ years in good condition, why spoil a good thing. I say leave them be.
