Hello friends.

For those of you who remember I purchased a Canadian Small Cent collection off ebay, well it arrived today and I am more than happy with it. The coins are in excellent to BU condition. Some of the cents from the 1960's appear BU condition. Not everything is there which I was aware of.

Missing are:

22, 23, 24, 25, 26, 27, 30, 31

but it appears everything else from 1920-current are represented.

Now here come the questions.

1948: there are two versions and I don't know what the difference is
1953: can someone explain the difference of "no shoulder fold" and "shoulder fold"
1965: difference between small and large beads
1985: difference between pointed 5 and blunt 5 (I received one 1985 coin)
2006P: why is that so rare? I did get one.
2007P, 2008P, 2009P: do they exist?

Thanks again everyone for sharing your knowledge of coins. It's nice to get an almost complete collection so quickly and easily.

Ken

1.Unsure who said the 2006P was so rare...one without a mint mark and magnetic are primo.
2. Look at the top right hand corner on the 5 on the 1985. use a loupe.l If its pointed, then you got a pointed variety. If its flat then..well...you know the rest.
3. No such thing as a 2007p-2009p. Only the one circle M mint mark.

Hope this gets ya started..Gotta go to bed.

Canada is very puritanical when it comes to the queen. In early 1953 the first coins to have the queen's likeness had no shoulder straps and this seemed to imply the queen was topless. In late 1953, shoulder straps were added to correct this perception. Apparently, some of no shoulder strap varieties also leaked into the 1954 and 1955 mintages as well.

A good site that shows the shoulder strap varieties, small versus large beads as well as blunt and pointed "5"s is:

You probably got a 2006 non-magnetic no mint marks, 2006RCM magnetic and 2006RCM non-magnetic. These are the common 2006 pennies. I would surprised if you got a 2006P from your ebay purchase.

2006P is the rarest of all official Canadian pennies, only 233,000 made. Even the key dates of 1922, 1923 and 1925 pennies had greater mintages at about 1 million each. And even the key date 1858 big cent had a higher mintage at 421,000.

The 2006P is found in circulation, typically 1 for every 5000 pennies from my experience. They are relatively cheap at the moment, costing less than $10.00 each.

2007P, 2008P, and 2009P do not exist. Only the RCM versions exist after 2006.

As for 1948, there are "A to denticle" and "A off denticle" varieties for 1949.
Here are the diagnostics for the better variety of that year:

Did you get both varieties of the 1947 also (Pointed 7, Blunt 7)?

Thanks everyone for all your help!

Appears that I didn't get a 2006P. I had no idea it was that rare. I did get magnetic and non-magnetic versions of the 2006. Thank for the web site. It explains everything clearly.

Both versions of the 1948 are included. Also Wpglwr, one version of the 1947 "7" was included, and it wasn't the one I already had to now I have all three varieties of the 1947 cent.

This was a good collection to get.

Good morning, Canada! I have a question for you fellow collectors of "sets". The tear, 1947 has a "definition" which I need an explanation: 1947 mortar set rev side. Can anyone be explicit, in what this means? New to Canacian coins, absolutely in the dark, in most of the terminology!
Thank you for your time and info.
