Greetings,

I am new to this site, but have been collecting US coins for several years. I have a question about Canadian coins. I am thinking about purchasing one of the 2008 1000 gram Canadian Coins.
http://www.mint.ca/store/coin/fine-...Id=cat120006

The current price is about $1190.00 USD which is a huge premium on the silver spot price. That being said, they will only be minting 2500 of these beautiful coins. My question is; Does anyone know if coins of this nature actually appreciate in value? I know as far as the value of silver goes it won't until silver exceeds $30 an ounce, which I do not expect to happen soon. I guess I am curious if these types of commemorative increase in value. I know the Canadian Mint issued a similar coin in 2007, but I am unable to find any values for that year anywhere. Thanks so much for any advice / information you can provide.

Thanks,

Kevin Donovan

Nope. The track record of most RCM issues is to fall in value over a period of about 5 years or so. In a few years this coin will trade at the price of the silver in the coin. There are lower mintage coins that have already done that. Collectors that presently are willing to pay higher premiums for coins are collectors that focus on business scarce to rare business issues.

Hi Kevin,

The 2007 Early Canada 1-Kilo coin was issued at a price of $1299.95.. current going rate for a PR67 is $1500 and a PR68 is $2000 (according to Charlton). So yes, it looks like they've gone up already

And to CCF!

By the way.. I believe Charlton lists in Canadian funds, so the prices above are not USD.
