Hey guys, I am new here. I was metal detecting in my neighbors yard yesterday with my xterra and I found a 1838 large cent. Can anyone tell me more about them. It was a cool find I think. You can read everything on the coin but it is tarnished, but I don't know if it is just dirt or been burnt. Also, is there anyway I could clean it without harming it? Thanks! I also found this in the ground and cleaned it with baking soda.

Stop cleaning until you have read some more posts. Because of the heavy corrosion, the coins probably haven't been hurt much, but there are better ways to handle these. Lay off the baking soda and try a water rinse first then pat dry. Olive oil soaks work great also. Give them 2 weeks in olive oil then rinse with water and pat dry again. You've had some good luck! Keep searching!

thanks guys. I don't have many coins, just some I have dug up over the last year or two and the ones I get from my grandpa.

Quote: Also, is there anyway I could clean it without harming it? Thanks! Nothing that won't make it look unnatural. On the other hand it already is severely harmed and it cost you nothing so you can't lose anything. But personally what I think would make it look best would be to put it in your pocket with some other coins and carry it as a pocket piece for a couple years.

That is not tarnish, it is corrosion(which is considered damage) and there is not much that can be done to improve the coin without damaging it more in the process. Copper does not tend to survive very well when buried. Conder's advice to carry it in your pocket with other change for a while is a good idea
