This 1969 D penny looks odd on the side of Lincoln's head and the lettering looks doubled. On the reverse the steps are bulging, the A M in America look like they may be touching. My digital microscope fizzled out on me so I'm struggling to see things right. Any input will be greatly appreciated.

Well, to CCF
this looks like the cent was subjected to either heat or an acidic environment (or both). It sure looks like a Close AM but it should be Wide AM for this year (right?)

The devices appear smaller than normal from over polishing of the die on the motto. I see no hub doubling from the images provided. There are a lot of Machine Doubling caused after the strike on the 1968-1972 cents. That is what your are seeing. It will be flat looking near one side of the devices on outside and inside devices. The flattened area is at a 90 degree angle on the Machine Doubling area:

Note the outside/inside edges of devices. Affected on just one side. This is not a doubled die. On a doubled die the center ares of the devices will be affected.

There were no concept of a Close AM at that point. There only one design then with the Wide AM. So it can't be considered as a Close AM. It is a RDV-002 design.

It maybe extreme die wear on that device. But the Close AM's were made until 1992, with the total roll out of them in 1993 on Business strikes and Proofs that year.
