Hello Everyone, Received my 2022 National Purple Heart Colorized Coin yesterday and I see a dent/gouge on the obverse of the coin above 'S' of States. Not sure if its an error and what type of error it is. With all the packaging issues happening lately with US Mint, I don't want to come to any conclusions and want to get your expertise on this. Attached the pics. Thanks! *** Moved by Staff to a more appropriate forum. ***Edited by maheshmahesh1984 07/28/2022 01:18 am

There shouldn't be any distracting areas in the fields of this proof coin but there it is.
Hmmm... Looks like it might be a planchet flaw?

Thanks Petes! Is it worth sending to grade this coin? I was initially planning to send to NGC for grading. Wasn't sure if its and error or just another defect like 2021 Morgan and Peace dollars.

Or dust/granules inside of the holder?

It is not raised? Someone told me about some rise metal near rim. Curious.

If I remember correctly, NGC graded the morgan and Peace dollars a straight grade even with the planchet flaws

It's not dust particles. Initially that was my impression, but after closer look under scope, I see a minor dent on the coin as if something struck to the die and pushed the metal inside.

Here are some additional pics taken under scope. And it gets onto letter S as well.

This it is caused by the metal composition and the annealing. Probably was begin with the rolling from improper annealing of the roll. The marks show clear a part detach due to the structural separation of the metal (molecular separation).

Based on the shadowing it looks incuse to me. Looks like a struck through issue.
Edit: note the issue can also be seen on the rim where the event has happened, if it's raised then it's something in the coin but I'm gonna say it was struck through something.
Second edit:...the more I look at it the more I'm thinking it's raised by the rim indent in the same spot makes me triple guess lol.

Thanks Everyone for your thoughts and inputs. Will go ahead and submit this to NGC as Struck through error and will see what comes back. Will post an update as soon as I get the coin back from NGC.
Appreciate your help on this!

You are using to light sources, so you can use light to tell the raised or incuse mark. To me it looks like it is on the surface of the coin. This is a proof coin. They dies are not used long enough to be a die chip. (They only strike 3K coins with 6K strikes as they are struck twice)

@coop, this is not on the surface. Its an incuse. I see a dip into the coin.

Not just the field, it's on the rim and the S, seems like to me it would be from a flawed blank.
