I've done some research on this one, hopefully correct. I believe it to be a King Henry 3rd halfpenny. Obverse shows a rudimentary bust of the king holding a sceptre. Possibly a crown, and now I'm doubting myself whether there are pearls in hair curls. I think maybe minted in Durham by Roger?

I like this one a lot. I don't have any whole hammered coins yet and everyone apart from this one has most of their faces cut off. So I like seeing his face.
I'm new to old coins...

I think we need @johnconduitt.

Looks like scepter then letter h around 9:00-10:00 so I assume class V.

Yes Henry III Class 5. The III is nice and clear before the sceptre and there are pellets in the hair curls. It is Durham, with the N and D ligated in ON DURHAM.

It looks to me like the moneyer is Ricard. That also means it has to be Class 5a, b or c. The letter R looks like 5b or c (wedge tailed). I think the eyes are oval, not round, which is 5c, I think 5c2, dated 1253-1256 (S 1369).

It's a very nice coin. It's not so often you get cut coins where you can work out what they are and I don't think it's all that common a type.

@johnconduitt Thank you for your reply. It's very informative. I'm a complete novice. It is nice to finally know the history of this piece.

Thank you both!
