Australia in 1953 also issued coins with Her Majesty on them, but the designs adopted in the previous reign remained (They were still attractive in my opinion). All denominations were issued, but the 6d is quite scarce with barely 1 million issued.   Here is the 3d, 1/- and a nice Florin for you. There were no celebratory coins as the Royal Tour reached Australia on Feb 2 1954 (After a 3 day voyage from Invercargill, New Zealand - I think it was Sydney she arrived in). Their Florin came out in early 1954 (You saw it last year!  )   The 1953 Florin, this coin is cloudy but very high grade (AU/UNC) The Australians took to the royal couple just like the Keewees and no doubt rivalries developed over who had the best sheep, pavlovas, lamingtons and Peach Melbas. Me too, Paraguay hit a home run with them!   And my one is the 25c, a denomination not yet shown.   UK Halfcrown - from that "Plastic" set.   Italy - 2 Lire, the aluminium coins of the 1951 recoinage included 1 and 2 Lire, but their low face value meant they were hardly used after about 1955 and only really appeared in sets. Thus making the 5 Lira the smallest usual coin in circulation. |
