1950 was another year with all British denominations from the farthing to halfcrown struck for circulation. The penny again was very scarce (240,000) and the threepence fairly scarce (1.6 million):  It was quite a big year in mainland Europe as countries started sorting their currencies out following World War II... France issued new 19, 20 and 50 Franc coins made of aluminium-bronze:  West Germany adopted new reverse designs on its coins with 'Bundesrepublik Deutschland' replacing 'Bank Deutscher Lander', as shown on this 10-pfennig:  A 1950 Belgian 50 Francs - this silver coin was introduced in 1948, although it was less commonly used than the 50-Franc banknote:  Monaco was attracting tourists again to its Casino, but the highest value French coin was the 50 Francs. To keep the roulette wheels and slot machines turning, the Principality authorised a cupro-nickel 100-Franc coin. This was struck by the Monnaie de Paris, although France had no equivalent coin at the time:  1950 was the last year of issue of the larger-size postwar Italian lire coins, like this aluminium 5 Lire - they were replaced by smaller coins from 1951:  Edited by NumisRob

1950 was a big year for New Zealand coins. There were 3.6 million half crowns minted, the most in 1 year and to this day, they are the most common date of halfcrown encountered. Surprisingly there are 2 types wide and narrow date, neither are rare but an affordable variety.  The wide date is slightly more scarce. Other coin numbers were mixed, lots of Florins and Pennies, not so many halfpennies and low numbers of 3d, 6d and 1/- all of which are hard to get in high grades. The coins of 1950 saw much use through to 1967 and afterwards for the 6d, 1/- and 2/- and most of these coins are found in VG to Fine, about as worn as cupronickel coin can get!   Apart from the Halfcrowns, these are all VF average pieces, 1950 coins are much harder to find high grade unlike 1951. |

NumisRob you and I must have some ESP type synergy! Seems NZ and UK quite similar with some common and some less common coins. Australia had an interesting year, no florins for a 3rd year.   The shilling was issued after not being issued in 1949 and the 6d and 3d came out in good numbers. Pennies were issued in Perth (Y.) and Melbourne version and the Halfpenny was Perth only. My 1950 Australian coins are quite average. Britain also issued a Proof set in 1950, which was a mid century thing and only the regular coins NumisRob shows were issued, no crowns or special one off pieces. I have a Florin and Half Crown from this set. The joy is just 17,000 or so sets were issued making these coins quite rare.   Although listed as a Proof, its more Prooflike, there is no cameoing or really special polishing on this florin like the 1951 coin. Maybe because it was 1950 and still austerity - its nice though.   There is a real gloss at least with the mirror like polished fields and its a not unattractive piece. More British coins soon! |
