1950 Mauritian Rupee


Half and Quarter Rupees, these are designs by Kruger Grey from 1934, by this stage they were worthless cupronickel. The Half and Full Rupee designs are still used today, but are reduced size.

I have a stamp club meeting tonight (Its 6.30pm NZ time) so need to get this out of the way early.

1949 was a strange year, no 3d, 6d or 1/- were issued. But a special crown was. Numbers of the Halfcrown and Florin, again were very high but not on the level of the Jumbo years of 1948 and 1950. Whereas numbers of the 3 lower silver coins were low in 1950 it seemed these were less needed. Penny and Halfpence numbers were static after major shortages in the war year. the former coin being minted in much higher numbers than the latter.


Here we have the Halfcrown (AU), Florin, Halfpenny and Penny. The rest of these are average sadly, although these are slightly nicer and cleaner ones (VF ish)


The highlight was the special crown though. This was issued for a Royal Visit of King George VI and the Queen Elizabeth (Mother not daughter, who was in Malta with her husband) and Princess Margaret. However the King's poor health stopped this, the proposed stamp issue was destroyed but they went ahead with the coins.

These were also 50% silver at a time all our coins had been muck metal since 1947. Designed by James Berry showing an iconic silver fern surrounded by the Southern Cross, 200,020 were minted and the 20 were proofs, all mega rare. The coins were minted at The Royal Mint and contained 14.14 grams of silver. Thet were sold through the Post Offices on 16 November 1949 at face value. They sold out in minutes with only stocks from our Island colonies (Samoa, Tokelau and Cook Islands) being returned in January 1950 and also sold out. The coin above is my best one in UNC but stained. It was a great move to get a juicy silver coin in a time of austerity, rationing and general misery.

I have many lesser grade ones too, but like most commems the average one is VF - EF.
