Amongst the 70 plus million half crowns the British minted is this one.   This one is almost uncirculated, but given you can get a VF or gVF one with little effort or cost, the motivation to get one this nice is low. It looks a bit more cluttered now Ind Imp is back.   Cameroon 1 Franc - similar to NR's Madagascar coin   Hong Kong 10 cents - well worn, the first year of this base metal series. Thats my 1948! Global coins get more sparse for me from now on. Really hoping Dorado has some 1948 Canadian dollars  Edited by Princetane

We've seen Madagascar and Cameroon, here's Saint Pierre and Miquelon...   Those blurry pictures don't do it justice - in hand the coin looks just about pristine. Brilliant uncirculated with a very light toning, and it almost feels like every single hair in Lady Liberty's locks is crisp. Under a (small) microscope I could see every feather in the privy mark. Honestly aside from the toning that coin looks like it was minted yesterday, not 70+ years ago. I guess this type probably wouldn't have circulated very much... The tiny French territory of Saint-Pierre and Miquelon only ever issued two coin types: this and a 2 franc coin that looks pretty much the same but a little larger. The mintage of this type was 600,000 - which would have been well over a hundred coins for every person in the territory at the time. I suspect most of them ended up unused. |

France, 1947, 1 Franc, Paris Mint  A pretty unremarkable, grimy little coin, but quite special to me as it was given to me by a stallkeeper in a Parisian market when I was 10 years old. |

1947 in New Zealand was the first year of base metal coinage for the 3d and up. Silver had become unaffordable breifly and was scrapped. The first 1947 dated coins did not arrive until November that year and were well received as they were still worth face value. The new metal was cheaper and more durable. By 1945 a 50% silver halfcrown of 30 pence contained between 9 and 13 pence worth of silver dependent on the price fluctuation. It also cost 2 or 3 pence to mint. On the other hand a cupronickel halfcrown cost just 1 penny for metal and 1 penny to mint! Silver coins were expected to be rounded up, but only about half were with many surviving in circulation until the 1960s. However many were retreived and sent back to Britain for melting, so they could pay for war loans from the USA. By 1951, this had been done.  All of the coins were minted in 1947 and none are scarce or rare. However the bleak economic and social climate of this era meant most coins were to be used and spent, rather than saved as collectibles. The average weekly wage was still only £5 in 1946.  The heads now shows "George VI King Emperor" as India is back in the empire as we head backwards in time. Most of my coins are at least VF and the shilling and 3d are EF. High grade Florins and Halfcrowns are hard as 1947 dated coins saw at least 18 years of wear. Very few people in 1947 or 1948 were interested in squirrelling away a base metal coin. However squirrelling away silver ones was a different story and you will see many 1946 and 1945 coins survive in high grade!   Close up of a VF 1947 Halfcrown. Edited by Princetane

Australia in 1947 saw only 4 of the 6 coins issued. There were no 6d or 1/- coins issued and the 3d is quite scarce with just 4 million minted (It was well into 8 figures most years since WW2). The Florin was issued however and only Perth Halfpence, lower quantities of Pennies from Perth and Melbourne came out (Mid 7 figures next to 20 million + most years).   A decent Bronze pair (Melbourne penny), nice 3d and stunning Florin.  Close up of Choice UNC florin, may be one of my best. This is bling bling and its downhill in florin land from now on. However you will see Florins from Australia most years now back to 1910.  |

Lovely Aussie florin, Princetane! The UK also abandoned silver coinage in 1947, and, as with NZ coins, few people bothered to save the new cupro-nickel coins at the time, so they are scarcer in EF and UNC than the silver ones, but very common in F and VF. There was no threepence issued in 1947, but all other coins are common:  Close-up of a Farthing, English shilling and Florin:    We were better off, however, than the French, with their aluminium francs:    Maybe no British threepences were struck in 1947 because The Royal Mint was too busy making them for Fiji:  My Australian florin isn't as nice as Princetane's:  Nor is my New Zealand halfcrown:  One country that was still minting gold coins in 1947 was Switzerland:  Edited by NumisRob
