1944 was a strange year in New Zealand. Numbers of the top 3 coins were very low, whereas the numbers of the 6d and below were fairly high.

Getting high grade 1944 coins is harder than other years!

1944 in Australia was interesting with silver coins being minted by San Francisco in the USA as well as Melbourne.

Only one type of Halfpenny (Melbourne) was minted and its scarce. The Perth penny is common (I have it) but Melbourne less so.
The 3d and 6d were only minted in San Fran and both are less common. Shillings and Florins were minted by both San Fran and Melbourne.


My group has San Francisco Florin, Shilling and 3d and a Perth penny. Also a Melbourne Shilling (All VF or better). The Florin is AU/gEF and one of the shillings (S - right) is EF. 3d is EF

As we move back further, we will see Denver helped with 6d and 3d!

Some lovely coins fot 1944 already!
The British coin set for 1944 includes the last silver threepence issued. The small silver 3d had effectively been replaced by the 12-sided nickel-brass 'threepenny bit' from 1937:

I got this 1944 3d with a lamination flaw in change when I was a kid. I didn't know what it was but I kept it!

Occupied France was using ugly aluminium and zinc coins with the usual legend 'Liberte-Egalite-Fraternite' replaced by 'Travail-Famille-Patrie', as on this zinc 10-centimes and aluminium franc:


This 2-franc piece exists with no mintmark (Paris), B (Beaumont-le-Roger) or C (Castelsarrasin). These coins remained in use as 2 centimes into the 1980s:


Another variety of the 1944 French 2-franc coin was struck by the US Mint in Philadelphia and brought over when the US troops liberated France. It's not one of Philadelphia's best designs, but, well, there was a war on!

Spain introduced a brass 1-peseta coin in 1944 that would remain current until the 1980s and introduced the coat-of-arms design which was used until 1980, although, confusingly, it was used as the obverse on this coin but became the reverse on subsequent issues that bore the effigy of Franco or King Juan Carlos. This is one of the few Spanish coins without a second date in small six-pointed stars:

Here's another Indian coin to join it Indian coins were still half silver, recently down from 92.5%


Beautiful but extremely worn South African Half Crown. Between 1923 and 1950 these coins were 80% silver. All of my other South African Half crowns including Boer ones are much less worn than this.
