I collect coins with the Holy Roman Empire iconography of the Madonna and child, so this one is among my favorites.

@paralyse, gorgeous coin!

And I am curious what the "range" of that collection is in time and space. I know those Hungary madonnas go back to at least mid-1400s, but not sure how far back was considered HRE?

I'd have to look to see what my oldest Madonna and child coin is. But the basic motif (Madonna and child with the Holy Roman Imperial symbols of the sceptre and globus cruciger) has been around on coins in one form or another for a long time, at least back to the 15th c. Hungarian denars as you noted.

The Holy Roman Empire can be very loosely defined as being of an era from the 11th to the late 18th c.

In 1848, when the war in Hungary broke out, Hungary was still very much dominated by the rule of the mostly Catholic Austrian Habsburgs (whose suppression of religious freedoms in that country was just one of many complaints that fueled the Hungarian revolution.) Even though the Revolution was not successful, the Madonna and child were gone from Hungarian coins by the 1850s, ending a 400-year run; already by 1848 when this coin was struck it was one of the few surviving European coins to still be using the Madonna and child motif.

The subsequent revival of the Madonna and child design for Ludwig II's Bavarian thalers of 1865-1871 was a very powerful political and religious statement considering the resurgent liberalism and Protestantism of a Germany increasingly dominated by Prussia at that time. (Bavaria was and still is the staunchest bastion of Catholicism in Germany.)
