Griffin was actually the name of the ruling house of Pomerania, which is why we see that fantasy critter on their coins. I really love it! I have a very obscure 1494 (the date written as XCIIII), a sechsling of the City of Hildesheim, probably one of the rarest coins in my collection:   Edited by tdziemia

That is a super coin @tdz. For today, I have this Half Groschen from the German Archbishopric of Mainz. It is dated 1493 AD.   "If you climb a good tree, you get a push."

Only one coin from 1491 AD for me: this Mariengroschen from Aachen. We will see this same basic design quite a bit in the days to come.   "If you climb a good tree, you get a push."

Even though this Körtling from Göttingen was among my first dated 15th Century European coins, I've still only owned it for about 2.25% of its life. I picked up another one dated also 1490 AD more recently, but I like the dark toning on this one.   "If you climb a good tree, you get a push."

Yeah, that Aachen coin is just amazing ... those of us playing in the early dated space know that 1491 is a supremely difficult date. I think I need to start saving, because that design hits all my buttons. I've got a homely gros of the Duchy of Brabant for 1490:   |
