The big news in the UK in 1973 was the issue of the country's first circulating commemorative - a 50 pence coin to commemorate the UK joining the EEC: Among lesser coins, only the halfpenny, penny and ten pence were issued for circulation... France issued its last 37mm silver 10-Franc coin: Barbados issued its first set of coins, including this 25c showing the Morgan Lewis Sugar Mill: Yugoslavia was still a united country with sizeable brass 1-Dinar coins: Portuguese Guinea was still a European colony: Nigeria finally went decimal and replaced its pennies and shillings with kobos: It was the last year of Norway's famous 'farmyard' coins: Also the last year of the reign of King Gustav VI Adolf of Sweden: Greece became a Republic and redesigned its coins: Austria was still minting virtually worthless 2-groschen pieces:

1973 the year my brother was born, Barry White was singing about "makin it", Eddie Kendricks was truckin and Delta Dawn was walking around Galveston (I really love the 70s musically). All the NZ coins came out in 1973, although in limited numbers. The 5 cents above is the rarest of all them at 1.5 million ( A lot less than Australia's 1972 coin with 8 million). Australian 20 cent piece, they also released all of the coins that year. I don't have a NZ big dollar for 1973, but it was the same old Coat of Arms design.

Also a 1973 Belgian Franc: A Cook Islands 50 cents (received in change on one of my trips to NZ!): South Korea 50 Won: Bangladesh 25 poisha: USA nickel, dime and half-dollar (Philadelphia Mint):

Greek coins of 1973 are interesting, the revolution was in April 1967 and the King was finally given the boot in December that year after helping anti coup factions. Yet we get coins in 1973 still with his portrait on them! The deposed King appears on these coins which have the phoenix rising from the ashes and the date of the Greek revolution (21 April 1967) on it. The 50 lepta, 2 and 5 Drachma are shown here. Fortunately later in 1973 a new set of coins was released in Greece The imperialist arms disappear to make way for "Greek" themes, weird artwork on the 50 Lepta, the Owl of Athens on the 1 and 2 Drachm and Pegasus on the 5 and 10 Drachma. You may notice the coins are smaller and the 2 drachmas down have been "Brassed". They also put out a large 20 Drachma coin (I don't have it) which replaced the silver one from 1960. Also missing are aluminium 10 and 20 Lepta. All of these coins were swept aside with a new series in 1976 which lasted through to Euroisation in 2002. As you will see, Imperial coins showing King Constantine II were issued up to 1971 at least. The King now lives in north London!

I have been busy this week and have not done too many 1973 coins sorry, I hope to pick things up as we hit the 60s. British EEC 50p, over night our biggest overseas market disappeared and we started to rely on importing stuff to Japan and the USA more. To go with NumisRobs Bajan quarter, I can add the dollar!
